Water, Yes! Plastic, No!!!

October 22, 2009

bottles1The “drink more water” message is working.  Americans are drinking a lot of water. The photograph above is proof. It was taken by renowned photojournalist Chris Jordan.  It’s hard to tell because of the size (see detail below), but you’re looking at  two million plastic bottles — the amount we throw out every five minutes!

Drinking water is good, but all that plastic takes a horrendous toll on the environment — and on our health.  Soft plastic containers are made with phthalates, toxic substances that have been shown to leach into water and food. In the body, phthalates are not our friends. They can disrupt the delicate balance of hormones, and have been linked to everything from alterations in breast and prostate tissue to birth defects.

Fortunately, there’s an easy way to get your water without the phthalates. Check out reusable water bottles, like Klean Kanteen. klean1

These canisters are inexpensive, very sturdy and guilt-free. I’ve had one for a couple of years and it still looks pretty much like new, even though it gets used every day. (btw, I have no relationship with the Klean Kanteen people and don’t get money or free merchandise for mentioning them. I just happen to like the product and think it’s a good alternative to plastic. )
