Want to Live to 100? Start Here …

October 12, 2009

bzbookbanner Yes, it’s time for Sunday book pimping! Today, it’s Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest by Dan Buettner. The author and a team of researchers traveled around the world, searching out communities of people who were known for living to a ripe old age. The book summarizes their findings and provides suggestions on how we can adapt their discoveries to our own lifestyles.

Blue Zones isn’t a new book; it’s already been featured on Oprah, NPR and plenty of other places. But the Blue Zones website is definitely worth a visit for a couple of reasons. First, it’s updated regularly with new information. The latest news comes from Buettner and company’s trip to the Greek island Ikaria, to get an in-depth idea of why its residents regularly hit triple digit birthdays. The whole experience is thoroughly documented (click on the “Ikaria” tab at the top right on the home page), so you can take a virtual tour in just a few minutes.

Second, the Blue Zones website has some great features. My favorite: the “Vitality Compass,” which consists of 35 questions (midway down the right hand side of the page).  The test is free, quick and easy to take. At the end, you’ll get a summary with a lot of interesting information, like your “actual age” based on your lifestyle, plus how long you are likely to live  and some ideas on how to improve those numbers.  A pretty good deal for anyone who’s interested in a longer, healthier life.
